Excursion: The Grinch

A musical performance of The Grinch at Heinz Hall kicked off our holiday excursion. We met some of the cast backstage after the show.

We all had dinner together at Carmi Soul Food on the Northside before dessert at the home of outgoing director of the Office of Public Art, Renee Piechocki. Our special guest, Santa Claus, showed up with gifts for all.

Excursion: Alcosan

The Alcosan Community Day provided us an opportunity to learn about the Allegheny County water systems. We went “fishing” and got to see inside of the water treatment plant.

Then, we traveled to Homewood for artist Alisha Wormsley’s public project The People are the Light. Wormsley spoke to our group about the project, and we participated in artist-led art making.

Excursion: Idlewild

A giant group of Hazelwood residents came out for a day at Idlewild Park in Ligonier. We rode rollercoasters, enjoyed the water park, and picnicked together.

Excursion: Gateway Clipper

July 2017

This was a seniors only excursion.

On this special trip just for seniors, we took a sight-seeing cruise of the Pittsburgh rivers aboard the Gateway Clipper. We then enjoyed lunch at the Grand Concourse along the riverfront.

Excursion: Art at the Airport

We spent the afternoon exploring the Pittsburgh International Airport and their art initiatives. We rode the terminal transportation, saw sculptures like Arch by Glenn Kaino and the iconic Franco Harris sculpture, the mosaic floor The Sky Beneath Our Feet by Clayton Merrill and the Tuskegee Airmen exhibition.

Excursion: Art in the Hill

May 2017

Exploring the neighborhood on a tour with Terri Baltimore of the Hill House.

We explored the Hill District neighborhood and learned about the art in public places, the important sites like the childhood home of playwright August Wilson, and enjoyed some musical instrument demonstrations at the Hill House Association.
